Plasma Lipemia: When the blood donor becomes a patient

Blood donation is essential to modern medical and surgical practices. A great effort is made to secure an appropriate stock for the institutional needs with high quality standards. Our blood donation center accepts whole blood donations that are processed into fresh frozen plasma, red blood cell units and pooled platelet units. The plasma is then sent for further processing in a different facility. Some donations yield lipemic plasma. According to the World Health Organization Recommendations for the Production, Control and Regulation of Human Plasma for Fractionation [1], “prior to freezing, plasma is clear (light opalescence may be allowed), yellow to green in colour, with no sign of haemolysis or presence of red cells”.
